It’s about twelve years lease and it’s been extended twice. The second extension was to give us this grant. Ok and that would mean that the complete responsibility for running the pool would be evolved to the Trust and through them to the management of the pool. Right so the Council presumably doesn’t have anything to do with the management of the pool. Nothing to do with the management of the pool. So you decided what you want to do from there? The Trust and the charitable side set their criteria as to how they would see the Programme running. We are not allowed to have private clubs and groups in. There is about six or seven quite firm criteria that we run to anyway about time for general use in the community. So that is the charitable status helping the community. It is a community pool which we try to maintain to obviously a very high degree. Right, ok, so does that mean that the post transfer really the only people that are actually volunteers in the pool are these Trustees?

That’s right. Right, ok. And it’s still the same now. Yeah, were you here from the beginning of the transfer then? Yes. So you are living history. That’s very convenient actually because I can talk to you about the living history bit. So how did you, I know you’ve covered this and talked about this to a certain extent, but how did the management of the pool change after the transfer because I mean presumably as I’ve said the Council thought it wasn’t economically viable, you’ve got no ongoing subsidy for the Council so you’ve got to think pretty hard about your costs and your income, haven’t you, so what changes did you make? Totally re-structured the Programme. Before we took over the pool was open from 7am with the staff but they didn’t start until 8.15 or 8.30am and then in those days, in the day shall we say, the main claim tells you the name of the schools because then it was just a running Programme organisation. Lunchtimes virtually nothing happened – it was supposed to be a cleaning session and then in the evenings they had the Council’s Star Award scheme in on a couple of nights and then they opened to the public and weekends were Sunday’s open and there was an ad hoc programme on Saturday’s and I just tried to formalise everything so we’ve got set days, set times, so people new when we were open, what we were doing and tried to attract customers round it. We did talk to the people in the area who were coming into the building about times for them with it being a community pool we wanted to make sure it was not just us writing a Programme but we wanted to make sure it was a Programme written for them so we new we would have a base for people coming in. Yes, so you weren’t a Manager before the transfer then? No, I was an electrical engineer.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
