negotiate with the US, decided they would be involved in the peace conference and it would involve the fact that the US wasn’t fully defeated-Wilson goes to the peace conference and makes all the calls-he thinks that people shouldn’t come out of the war feeling they need revenge, wants to promote democracy and self-determination around the world, an open-door policy

-a great amount of confusion arises from the ideals behind Wilson’s words- many countries want to know what he means by self-determination-Lloyd George-George Clemenceau-Wilson’s plans call for a treaty that Germany will accept, and he also goes to create a League of Nations-the final outcome of the peace treaty is considerably harsher than what Wilson had expected, but Germans didn’t come out of the war feeling like they really lost the war-Treaty of Versailles- Germany loses all overseas colonies, loses navy, army is shrunk, and Germany has to sign the treaty that says Germany will accept full responsibility for the war, and Germany will have to pay back for all reparations of the war-lots of little states are created-by giving independence to these countries, the basis will be given to them so that they will be satisfied, and Europe will stop being so unstable-there will be mandates for the League of Nations, run from the outside and (in theory) run by the bigger powers-British and French were eager to control the lands of the Middle East as soon as the war was over- this was because the war had demonstrated that there was a lot of oil here-WWI demonstrated the value of oil in many ways, it meant wealth and power-British and French began making contradictory promises and claims on the land they would take over for oil-another controversial outcome of peace conference, Japan wanted to rid the far east of any powers-British and France gave Japan Shantung to sway the hard feelings Japan was feeling-state of war comes to an end in Europe, left behind a great deal of destruction and confusion in Europe (in WWI)-WWI saw the death of 8 million people, was extraordinarily expensive and many countries were in debt and made huge economic sacrifices, many people became refugees because of the war, by creating the states in Europe it actually didn’t stop instability as planned, many different cultures fought over where the lines were drawn and what land was whose-Germany becomes a republic at the end of WWI, loses a lot of territory and Germans feel that they will get the land back later on down the line (they were not reconciled)-in Europe there is a great deal of soul searching, people that that the industrial revolution would only lead to even greater things, yet it only led up to an devastating world war-US is the big winner in terms of wealth after WWI, it emerges as the greatest industrial country in the world, Detroit and Wall Street become the place where the greatest technology is centered-May 4, 1919 – May 4thmovement- starting point for modern Chinese Nationalism
