Additionally, the District of Columbia outlawed slavery, but made its Fugitive Slave Laws stricter. Fugitive Slave Law The Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, which came as a part of the Compromise of 1850, made it so that any slaves could not testify on their own behalf if caught fleeing. Also, it would impose fines and jail time upon any Northerner who helped fugitive slaves.

Underground Railroad The Underground Railroad was a network of anti-slavery homes that would bring fugitive slaves from the South into Canada. Because so many escaped through these means, the South began demanding stricter fugitive slave laws. Harriet Tubman was a prominent guide of the Underground Railroad, during this time. Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman was an illiterate runaway slave who guided hundreds of fugitive slaves through the Underground Railroad to freedom in Canada. Her role in the Railroad would gain her the title of ‘Conductor’, and she also became a nurse, and a Union spy during the Civil War.
