The reader identifies with the first soldier, Jimmy Cross who is the lieutenant of an Army unit, in a special way. The narrator succeeds in describing the thoughts as well as the actions of Lt. Cross. Firstly, Lt. Cross is preoccupied with the thoughts of a young woman he dated before joining the Army referred to as Martha. Jimmy Cross is caught in thoughts of whether Martha is a virgin and whether she loves him as much as he loves her. The letters that Lt. Cross received from Martha do not suggest that she feels the same way. One can only empathize with an individual in the shoes of Jimmy Cross.
