Siebel Business Process Framework: Workflow Guide Version 8.1, Rev A Environment for Developing a Workflow Process About the Process Property 48 Process Property and the Property Set A property set is a hierarchical structure that contains name and value pairs, known as properties, at each level in the hierarchy. The process property stores data that is associated with the property set. A workflow process uses a property set in order to pass data to and from a step that exists within a workflow process. Figure 12 illustrates how a process property can be used within a workflow process. Example usage within a workflow process is described in the following sequence: 1 A process property is used to send data to Workflow Step 1 as an input argument. 2 Workflow Step 1 manipulates the data according to the configuration for Step 1. 3 An output argument on Workflow Step 1 sends data from the step to the process property. 4 An input argument on Workflow Step 2 brings the data that is manipulated in Step 1 into Workflow Step 2, where it can be manipulated according to the internal configuration that is defined for workflow Step 2. The process property and step arguments are defined in the Multi Value Property Window. For more information, see “Multi Value Property Window” on page 50 . Initial Values of a Process Property When a workflow process is started, a process property that is of type string, number, or date with an In/Out type of In or In/Out is initialized to the input property with the same name, if one exists. A hierarchy process property with an In/Out type of In or In/Out is initialized with child input property sets that contain a matching name. A process property that contains a Default String set to [Value] is initialized with the value in the Value property of the input property set. Figure 12. A hierarchy process property with an In/Out type of In or In/Out is stored as a child property set. If a process property with the name [Value] is defined, then the value of the property is stored in the Value property of the output property set. NOTE: The process property [Value] can also be used to pass binary data in a sub process step. The input argument [Value] of the subprocess can be initialized with data in the main process, then retrieved in the sub process step. For more information, see “Passing Data to and from a Workflow Process” on page 182 .
