Personality- what do we mean? In terms of mental illness a mental illness gets in the way of carrying out the mental functions that make someone unique That Freudian shit whatever happens in your young life will influence who you are That new behavioral shit it’s not the whole show though, things can change you as you go about your life in all stages Example: Why does the death of a loved one affect others differently? How come some people can move on and some people can’t? Dream analysis was from Freud Defense mechanisms was from Freud he said we need ways to protect ourselves (the ego) Sometimes defense mechanisms are coping mechanisms (psychological coping mechanisms) are relatively involuntary reactions to conscious or unconscious situations in order to reduce anxiety CBT is the most prominent way to handle this, just like everything really Defense Mechanisms: Denial is the psychological behavior that we use in order to stop dealing with info that is threatening. We block knowledge, it distorts reality. This can cause really bad harm. Psychologists help with helping people come to realization and face it Intellectualizing – when you generalize your behavior (ex: everyone takes pencils from the library without paying or returning it) Projection – you don’t like something about yourself so what you may do is project it onto someone else (ex: a boyfriend is cheating and he doesn’t like it so he accuses his girlfriend of doing it too) Repression- exclusion from awareness (it seen as an unconscious thing of pushing whatever is discomforting away) suppression is when you consciously push it away (ex: I’ll think about it tomorrow / I’ll deal with it next week) A healthy defense mechanism sublimation is when socially unacceptable behaviors are turned into socially acceptable behaviors (ex: I’m angry as hell, I’m gonna turn that into a beast mode focused gym session). Humor is an example of this but sarcasm (another defense mechanism) is not very inviting (defense mechanisms will be on the exam) So let’s talk about sociology now The three sociological theories: Sociological things deal with the external. The situation you’re in (social status, sociological wellbeing, etc.) influences your mental wellbeing.
