experience as a registered nurse will hopefully assist me in advancing my professional development in my new role of nurse practitioner. As a newly graduated nurse practitioner, one must conduct a complete personal assessment that will delineate their strengths, weaknesses, goals and objectives prior to seeking employment. Strengths and Weaknesses The two main strengths that I have acquired throughout my years of practicing as a registered nurse are effective communication skills and the values and beliefs related to good work ethic and teamwork. Effective communication skills and teamwork may be two of the most important qualities for healthcare professionals to acquire in order to keep the workplace running efficiently and also for reducing potential risks to patient safety. Some other positive qualities and strengths I possess are honesty, caring, punctual, and organized. In order to honesty and affirmatively perform a personal assessment, an individual must also identify his or her weaknesses. My biggest weakness is my ability to adapt to change. My lack in the ability to adapt to change is not influenced by incompetence, but more so by my “creature of habit” type personality and the uncertainty of the consequences brought on by change. I am fully aware that change in the health care industry is inevitable, and by not recognizing and accepting certain changes could potentially influence by professional growth and development in a negative manner. Goals and Objectives Developing and establishing short-term and long-term goals is pertinent to all individuals seeking employment and to enhance their professional development. One short-term goal is to obtain employment as an entry-level nurse practitioner in a primary care practice where I can
ADVANCED PRACTICE NURSE 6 gain the knowledge and experience to further develop my professional career as a nurse practitioner. Another short-term goal is to acclimate myself to the new working environment by building trusting relationships with fellow colleagues and patients. Networking would be the main objective in assisting me to meet my intended short-term goals. I would begin the networking process by joining local or national professional organizations, such as the Ohio Association of Nurse Practitioners or the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. One long-term goal that I desire to achieve is to become a faculty member at the university level and teach future nurse practitioner students. The objective to meeting this intended long-term goal is to further my education by pursuing a Doctorate in Nursing Practice. Networking and Marketing Strategies According to DeNisco and Barker (2015), the development of professional networking should begin while attending the APN educational program. Professional networking can be accomplished by joining professional organizations, participating in professional conferences, and attending continuing education programs (DeNisco & Barker, 2015). Some benefits of networking include: creating contacts with potential employers, creating relationships that support new opportunities and enhancing professional development (Goolsby & Knestrick, 2017). At the local level in Ohio there are two professional organizations, the Northeast Ohio Nurse Practitioners and the Ohio Association of Advanced Practices Nurses.
