Average Melting Point 123.9 Table 2 shows the melting point ranges for the two tests, tube 1 and tube 2. The table also shows the average melting point of the samples. Benzoic acid is known to be a colorless crystalline solid which is what was observed following our recrystallization procedure. This attribute allowed us to determine that we had isolated benzoic acid. The melting point of pure benzoic acid had been found to be 122.3°C. While our sample proved to be higher than the range, the melting point was close to that of benzoic acid. The melting point of our sample was likely taken after the sample began to melt which would provide inaccurate results. Our sample also gained mass following the purification which was either an issue with the balance or the result of further impurity from the container in which it was placed. We would like to conduct a further experiment utilizing a different scale and drying the sample for a shortened timeframe to ensure more accurate results. The technique recrystallization was used because it is a simple method to purify a solid compound. it was necessary to heat the compound in order, for the acid to dissolve within its respective solvent. By using the correct formula, we could determine the % recovery easily which turned out to be 190.31%, which is a
