under President Bill Clinton, the privacy of medical records was supposedly ensured by the
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS, 2007).
However, this current administration announced an initiative called MyHealthEData that
allows patients virtually open access to their medical records which can then be sent
electronically to providers or other medical practitioners at will (Cohen & Mello, 2018). Does
the question arise that with the ability of computer hackers to forge their way into high-security
electronic databases, how secure are anyone’s records? What is the impact on medical research
under the MyHealthEData provisions (Cohen & Mello, 2018)? It is imperative for researchers to
guard their research data by ensuring they preserve the anonymity of subjects willing to
participate in medical studies (Mariampillai et al., 2017; Masic, Hodzic, & Mulic, 2014; Nisselle,
2018). Subjects willing to participate in research into the efficacy of diet and exercise as
principal controllers of HTN over that of ACE inhibitors as the first line of defense have the
guaranteed right to privacy that requires protection by researchers (HHS, 2007; Mariampillai et
al., 2017; Masic et al., 2014).
Evidence-Based Practice
Several models in assessing HTN and blood pressure (BP) are undertaken to maintain the
cost-effectiveness for routine diagnoses of HTN. Guidelines established by the National Institute

for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) show that ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
(ABPM) and self-blood pressure monitoring (SBPM) have decreased costs for office visits for
routine BP assessments, with initial results showing these measures help in establishing early
diagnosis of HTN (Schwartz & McManus, 2015, p. 258). However, Schwartz and McManus
(2015) also found that very few studies performed to reveal the efficacy of older adults and
SBPM and the reduction or early detection of cardiovascular diseases. According to Lee et al.
(2018), limited studies on the benefits of diet and exercise over ACE inhibitors. Therefore, to
determine the significance and efficacy of diet and exercise as a first line defense against HTN
further studies are needed to fully appreciate the importance of non-sedentary lives by the aging
population. By creating research initiatives into HTN, food, and diet versus ACE inhibitors, the
older population will have more options by which to avoid HTN and the repercussions of
limiting physical activity and healthy living (Lee, Kim, Shim, Hong, Lee, Jeon, & Park, 2018).
