± Inspired by The Beatles, Brian Wilson poured his creativity into the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds , which became one of the most influential albums in popular music . Following the success of Pet Sounds, some musicians began to shift their focus to the cohesion of entire albums, as opposed to singles . ± Borrowing from classical and avant-garde styles, other bands rose to fame exploring “ art rock ,” including Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, the Velvet Underground, the Doors, and the Grateful Dead . ± The Beatles continued to dominate the musical scene as the leading band of rock and roll and undertook their third U .S . tour . Their music got progressively more and more experimental with their 1965 album Rubber Soul and their 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band These albums relied more heavily on studio techniques such as tape manipulation and musique concrète and moved toward psychedelia with drug references, dramatic tempo changes, and non- Western musical elements .
