CSR AND ETHICS 5 responsibility. By 2004, there was only one article concerning the role of hotels in promoting corporate social responsibility. Figure 1 below illustrates the number of articles which have been published concerning the role of hotels and tourism industry in the CSR promotion; Figure 1: Articles published between 2004 and 2007 concerning CSR and hospitality industry From the figure above, it is notable that in spite of the tremendous levels of benefit which the hospitality and tourism industry have on the country’s social and political spheres, very little work has been done concerning the contribution of these sectors to Corporate Social Responsibility. The reality is an indictment on the various players in the sector since it suggests that CSR has not been taken seriously by the stakeholders. That reality creates the need to carry out an in-depth assessment of the role which hotel managers play in the promotion of the involvement of the organizations in corporate social responsibility. Jay Westerveld is a renowned American environmentalist who has made significant contributions in environmental conservation efforts. He has written essays about the environment where he explored some of the most desirable practices which are capable of improving the

CSR AND ETHICS 6 environment. In 1983, Westerveld travelled to the Pacific islands and he had to put up in hotels. In one hotel, Westerveld found a placard which instructed the guests in the rooms to reuse the towels they had been provided with for the sake of the protection of the environment. On face value, one would think that the placard sent a message which if implemented, would have positive impacts on the environment. However, Westerveld did not think in this line. According to him, the hotel was not interested in saving the planet but money. The term “greenwashing” was coined by Westerveld in an article he published after some few years. The term is used to refer to claims, practices and misleading assertions which individuals may have concerning the benefits of a product or a technology or practice on the environment. In the experience of Westerveld, he thought that the claim about the possible benefits of reusing the towels on the environment was misleading. The encounter of Westerveld has been referred to by many scholars who study the contribution of hotels and their management on ethics and corporate social responsibility while it has always
