Public Health social workers focus on identifying children, families, elderly, and physically and intellectually disabled adults who have needs. Social workers provide intervention services to help clients discover ways of meeting their needs and preventing future problems. there are three levels of prevention that central to public health social work practice. the levels include Preventing Disease and adverse conditions(physical, emotional, behavioral) from ever occurring by promoting healthy behaviors. prevention activities, protective measures, promoting early diagnosis and treatment to minimize the effects of illness and working to rehabilitate or restore clients to improved functioning after the onset of a disease or condition. (alabamapublichealth.gov) As of today, Alabama's health ranking in the nation is 46th with high infant mortality, diabetes, and cardiovascular rates as significant challenges. Alabama is the 6th poorest state, and almost 20% of the population is living in poverty or on the poverty line. ADPH has been trying to fill the gap by giving access to healthcare to members of the state who live in rural areas who cannot reach the health department for specific reasons. The Alabama Department of Public Health is funded by Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant. "In 1981, Congress authorized the PHHS Block Grant which gives 50 states, the District of Columbia, 2 American Indian tribes, and 8 U.S territories the independence and flexibility to tailor prevention and health promotion programs to their particular public health needs. There are no two states who allocate their funds the same way or provide similar amounts of funding to the same program or activities. Although a strong emphasis is placed on adolescents, communities with little or inadequate health care services, and disadvantaged populations. (encylcopediaofalabama.org) The general atmosphere of the ADPH is a calm, professional, and positive work environment.
