12case research journal •volume 21 •issue 3 •summer 2001Nick Smith, Marina Director The marina director was responsible for the resort’s growing marina operations, runlargely out of the Davey Jones marina. This marina included dock space for up to35 boats, a fuel and water dock, and yacht maintenance services. The marinaattracted yachting enthusiasts who were seeking a short stay in a resort environ-ment. Nick Smith was promoted 8 years ago to his current position as marina direc-tor. Smith, now 45 years old, was originally from the United States and had beenworking at the resort for nearly 15 years. He lived on the property along with hiswife and their 6-year-old daughter.Waterfront Director The waterfront director’s position was created to assign responsibility to oversee thegrowing waterfront activities at the resort. The director’s responsibilities includedoverseeing the water sports department and its director (as well as the resort’s ﬂeetof day excursion boats), planning and promoting day excursions, and developingand maintaining relationships with the sites that day excursions visited. The resorthad hired several expatriates for the waterfront director position. For a variety ofreasons, these expatriates had not worked out. Two had become alcoholics, and onehad mysteriously packed his belongings and departed in the middle of the night.
