The first three pages include name dropping different people that showed up and their history. The biggest thing to take away is that Gatsby invited a diverse group of people with different histories. They came from different parts of the United States- some were actors, well known families, people that eventually died in weird situations, princes, etc Nick has lunch with Gatsby and looks at Gatsby’s expensive/showy car. Even though Nick had talked to Gatsby a few times before, he never really had a real conversation with him.-- “So my first impression, that he was a person of some undefined consequence, had gradually faded and he had become simply the proprietor of an elaborate road-house next door” (Nick, 64) During car ride, Nick gets annoyed with Gatsby because he has a huge secret to spill but Gatsby won’t spill. Readers learn that Gatsby’s parents were rich, died, left him with a lot of money, went to the army. Gatsby uses Mrs. Baker to tell Nick the secret. Jordan Baker tells Nick the secret.-- Daisy and Gatsby used to be lovers but split up when Gatsby went into the war and then Daisy married Tom. Gatsby is still in love with Daisy and bought a house to be across the bay from her. Daisy got a letter from Gatsby and wanted to call off the wedding but didn't. Gatsby wants Nick to have tea and invite Daisy over so he can finally see her. Readers get a feeling of the internal struggle with Nick as he is not sure if he loves Jordan Baker or not or if she is just kinda there. Chapter 5 part 1 - Nick was worried his house was on fire, but it was actually Gatsby’s (but he wasn’t hosting a party) - Gatsby tries to please Nick by offering to go to Coney Island & taking a plunge in his swimming pool (trying to get Nick to agree to his favor, looked at Nick with “suppressed eagerness”(82)) - Gatsby wants Nick to get his grass cut - Gatsby asks Nick if he makes enough money & gives Nick a job offer that doesn’t have to do with Wolfsheim - “It happens to be a rather confidential sort of thing” (Gatsby, 83)
- Nick gets a little offended: “the offer was obviously and tactlessly for a service to be rendered, I had no choice except to cut him off there.” (Nick, 83) - Next morning, Nick invites Daisy for tea the next day, telling her not to invite Tom - It rained the whole day of Daisy’s arrival -
