Leadership and Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) was my first course in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program at Chamberlain College and has set the tone for the rest of the program. MSN program outcome number five states: “Develop a plan for lifelong personal and professional growth that integrates professional values regarding scholarship, service and global engagement”. Personal growth was achieved in this course during self-assessment. I was able to identify my strengths, weaknesses, goals, and expectations of becoming an APN. Recognizing my goals and expectations allows me to form a plan for the future where I can highlight my strengths and improve on my weaknesses. I identified myself as a novice prior to this course, and successfully completing this course is only the first step on a lifelong journey of becoming an expert APN. Professional growth was achieved in this course from the wealth of knowledge I discovered through the lessons, readings, research, case studies, and discussions. Prior to this class, I was unaware of the different state practice environments and irregularities in practice between states. Identifying this topic dictates how I will practice as an APN in the restricted practice state of California. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) lists MSN Essential IX: Master’s-Level Nursing Practice as “Recognizes that nursing practice, at the master’s level, is broadly defined as any form of nursing intervention that influences healthcare outcomes for individuals, populations, or systems. Master’s-level nursing graduates must have an advanced level of understanding of nursing and relevant sciences as well as the ability to integrate this knowledge into practice. Nursing practice interventions include both direct and indirect care components” (AACN, 2011). I have learned about the scope of practice for California APNs during this course. California APNs must be supervised by a physician and are to follow standardized procedures during patient care (Terry, 2016). Additionally, I have learned how the fight for expanded practice

environments indirectly affects the public. Allowing APNs full practice will increase access to cost-effective healthcare for underserved populations (Choi & De Gagne, 2016). NP Core Competencies #2 Leadership Competencies discusses the advanced APN roles of leadership, collaboration, advocacy, communication, advancement, and participation. During this course, I was able to identify my lack of experience as a leader. Identifying this weakness allows me to work on this aspect as I continue through school and work. Gaining leadership knowledge and experience now will
