Instead of arguing and not getting anywhere, I suggested another sweater all together. We both loved it, and it worked! This actually turned out really well. When I decided to be assertive and just find a new solution to the problem all together, it worked better for both of us. It was good to see improvement by using the tools I learned. This was a solution to our competitive style that had never crossed my mind before. In the future, I will remember to be collaborative. It is so much better for both of us. The last thing I wanted to focus on was looking at cross-generation communication . My mother is defiantly a “Boomer”. She is confident in her opinions, she will challenge old ideas, and puts time into any task. Being right is something that is

never a question to her and she wants me to be just like her. I am definitely an N- Gener. I am pretty tolerant, and I am pretty optimistic. But I can see in myself how I need constant praise. These two generations can clash, I’ve learned from example. It is pretty obvious that my mother and I grew up in different worlds. It wasn’t as acceptable to stand out when she was growing up. Now, everyone just wants to stand out. I wanted to work on communicating through these differences. I decided to improve the circumstances by talking to her about what it was like when she was younger. I did this to understand where her conservative ideas came from. She explained to me that when she was growing up, the style was pretty conservative. Bright colors and bold accessories were not very popular back then. I discovered that her ideas of acceptable differ from mine because she grew up with different ideas surrounding her. It made things click about her solid perceptions on appearance. I am glad I applied this knowledge I gained this way. We are from a completely different generation, which makes sense of our different ideas. It also partly explains why we don’t see eye-to-eye on certain things. I now understand that the style world in her eyes hasn’t evolved much, but to me it changes everyday. The boldest and brightest is the best for me, but the more conservative and calm for her the better. I’m so glad I realized this. It will save me from taking more offence in the future. This semester has taught me a lot about how to communicate with individuals. I’ve discussed how I’ve applied the things I’ve leaned in this class to the relationship I have with my Mother, but I have applied it to most of the relationships I have in my life. It has been so useful and I am grateful for the skills I’ve been able to learn throughout the semester. Like I said before, I have learned that we cannot not communicate. I have

learned that the self is a process, the perception and punctuation are important, that we have to say what we mean, and most importantly I’ve learned to be understanding. Applying these principles in my life will help me be a good communicator in every aspect of my life. And I hope to always be able to follow my Dad’s advice and never take offence when none is intended.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
