Companies were no longer able to refuse recognition of collective bargaining (the process of negotiations between employees and employers). Labor unions began to expand in providing assistance and inspiration to obtain shorter working hours for employees, regular pay and safer conditions for workers. The Department of Labor was launched under President William Howard Taft's Presidency, becoming the main governmental agency in the protection of worker’s rights. The agency's mission is to foster, promote and develop the welfare of the United States ' wage earners, job seekers, and retirees; improve working conditions; advance profitable employment opportunities, and ensure work-related benefits and rights.” (U.S Dept. of Labor). Its responsibility rest with wage laws, rules and hourly standards, reemployment services, economic statistics, employee benefits, equal opportunity, and the safety of employees. The Department of Labor now holds 28 departments within the combination of agencies, “Employees’ Compensation AppealsBoard (ECAB), Employee Benefits Security Administration (EBSA), Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), the Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA), the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), the Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs (OWCP), Veterans’ Employment & Training Service (VETS) and lastly Women’s Bureau (WB). These are some of the departments that’s in the organization with the diverse functions” (, 2016), in charge of protecting and promoting the rights of American workers and assuring safety for them within the workplace. It is the responsibility of Department of Labor to endorse the safety and well - being of workers, retirees, job seekers, and wage earners, improving unsafe working conditions, promoting profitable employment opportunities and assure the rights and benefits that are related to jobs in U. S.
