My opinion about the “Koreanness” of K-pop is that though John Lie asserts that there is almost nothing Korean about K-pop musically and culturally I believe that the artists are Koreans. By the fact that the artists are Koreans this proves that at least there is something Korean in the K-pop. Hence as Ingyu Oh argues that Korea has been prosperous in adopting culture from elsewhere, packaging it as Korean, and redistributing it abroad, I believe that to make something successful, it is always advisable to be dynamic. Korean is K-pop anyway since the singers and producers are almost exclusively ethnic Koreans. It matters in the sense that the government of Korea and fandom take pride in the Koreanness of K-pop and this is why even the Defense Ministry held a discussion to display the videos on the screen along the DMZ. It also matters in the sense that it promotes global talent networking pools and social capital in the formerly disconnected music industry. In this case, through K-pop, Korea occupies a structural hole between Western and Eastern Asian music industries. Even though K-pop is said to be an imitation of American or somewhat Japanese popular music forms, the pride that Koreans feel about K-pop popularity can be explained by the fact that it modifies the culture of these regions. Korea busts of national pride since it acquired transnational recognition through pop culture even though it has never enjoyed the regional or somewhat international recognition of its culture.
