There could always be a 3rd factor that we dont know

This preview shows page 2 out of 2 pages.

- there could always be a 3rd factor that we don’t know about that is causing both - there could be a genetic factor that causes an automatic cause of cancer which ALSO causes a craving for nicotine and therefore they smoke and even if they didn’t smoke they would get cancer anyway - this is an example of a 3rd factor (potentially) - we need a randomized controlled study: control all variables so that there are no outside factors to interfere with it AND the group being experimented on are RANDOMIZED - some people chose to smoke and some people chose not to smoke so how can we figure out if they have a craving or not? - randomized control trial: take a bunch of people at random, force some to smoke, force others NOT to smoke and only then can you experiment. don’t pay attention at all to age gender or anything. only then is there no pre-selection bias because they had no control - (obviously if you have a placebo you CAN NOT know that!!!! because the way you perceive yourself will effect the results) - obviously it is unethical to force people to smoke if it could be related to cancer.. this is why we can’t do many studies Sept 2nd, 2010

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
