Next are Siddhartha’s most important teachers; the river and Vasudeva. The river was not just a teacher, but also saved Siddhartha. After Siddhartha had left the town, he had thought about committing suicide by drowning himself for what he had become. But when Siddhartha listens to the river, he hears “OM” and this reminds him that if he kills himself, he would have to come back anyway to this sorrow by reincarnating. The river had helped Siddhartha so much in for him to get back up and keep going, until he reached his goal. He also meets Vasudeva, the

ferryman, who also uses the river as his teacher. Loving Vasudeva’s radiant and bright smile, Siddhartha becomes Vasudeva’s assistant. Vasudeva had said that he had stayed so happy because of the river. “‘Love this river, stay by it, and learn from it.’ Yes he wanted to learn from it, he wanted to listen to it. It seemed to him that whoever understood this river and its secrets, would understand much more, many secrets, all secrets” (Hesse 101-102). The river had also taught Siddhartha that time is non-existent. There is no such thing as time. And when Siddhartha’s son came and then ran away, Vasudeva also prevented Siddhartha from being like the “ordinary” people. Vasudeva mainly taught Siddhartha how to be calm, which is what really helped him in achieving Nirvana. Vasudeva had saw that Siddhartha was sad from his son running away, so he takes him to the river. The river sounds like it’s saying “OM”—perfection. Then he sees the radiant smile on Vasudeva’s face, and his smile becomes like Vasudeva. “I have waited for this hour my friend” (Hesse 136). This is when Siddhartha had become enlightened! All the teachers mentioned played a big role in Siddhartha’s achievement of his ultimate goal. Without any of these teachers, Siddhartha probably couldn’t have reached Nirvana. Each one played a big role in his journey. That is how I believe each one of these teachers helped Siddhartha achieve his ultimate goal—Nirvana.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
