-Does not automatically expand: Reagan US has less of welfare state than many other countries: -Concentration of wealth owned by the richest 10% of the population is 69.8%, just below Switzerland (ranked 2 nd ) -Total poverty of the US is 17% (21.9% of children and 24.7% of elderly) -US has highest child poverty rate In 2008 (before taxes and transfers, US has a very high rate of child poverty, ad after taxes and transfers, fairly modest changes have occurred, leaving US with still a very high rate) -Labor union rates low -Earn more in the United States, but also work more weeks (in many countries, guaranteed a vacation, but not in the US) -Americans believe they are “over-taxed,” but in reality Americans pay lower taxes than their counterparts in all other affluent countries except Japan. The US pay about ¼ of their GDP in taxes, versus Sweden and Denmark, which are around 50%. -Based on percentage of GDP, US ranks next to last (after Ireland) in economic resources devoted to government social programs (child chare, health care, etc), which is a little below 15%, whereas Sweden and Denmark is around 30%. -Health spending accounts for 15.3% of GDP in the US, the highest share among affluent countries. US also spends more on health on a per capita basis. Public spending on health fairly low, but private spending on health HUGE. -Infant mortality rates in US remain high in contrast with other affluent countries
