According to Blesi (2016), MAs will face ethical situations or dilemmas where they must uphold professional standards. Blesi (2016), states that most MAs will experience aggressive patients who demand they do something, such as authorize or refill a prescription. The MA must not forget about the ethical code they promised to uphold just because a patient they have a good rapport with is
demanding they do something they know is wrong. The MA must refuse the assignment and let the patient know this duty is outside of what they are legally allowed to do; in doing so, the MA demonstrates that they can adhere to legal requirements and professional ethics (Blesi,2016). The two legal issues, in this case, is malpractice and exceeding the scope of practice. According to Texas state, the medical assistance cannot prescribe medication autonomously or independently refilling the prescription (The State of Texas,2016). Stephanie’s unauthorized scope of practice put providers license at risk. If the provider should be sued for malpractice as she is responsible for supervising medical assistant and make sure that he or she is practicing within the standard of care.
