True friendships satisfy all 4 criteria  Other friendships may satisfy some, but will not satisfy all Non-virtuous people may satisfy three and four Criticism o A friendship between a virtuous person and a continent person who  does the right thing for the right reasons They may satisfy criteria 1 For friendship to endure, virtue must endure and because a  continent person does not have virtue it does not necessarily  satisfy the second criteria However, if the virtuous person recognizes the continent  person’s efforts and attempts to habituate virtue they may  continue to be friends They probably will share in activities Although the continent person may not take pleasure in  participating in virtuous activities they can become virtuous and  begin to take pleasure in it  o To say that only 2 people alike in virtue can have a true friendship may  be too strong of a claim  Question 6 There’s an intimate relation between free action and moral action o If you have a free will then your will is determined by the categorical  imperative; you are bound by the categorical imperative o To show that you really are bound by the categorical imperative he  must prove that you really do have a free will, which is what he does in  the last 4 steps  11 premises o 1. A free will is not determined by external causes External causes do not determine free will That’s just what a free will is o 2. Nor is it undetermined

However, simply because external causes do not determine free  will does not mean that something doesn’t determine free will If a will were undetermined, things would just happen at  random ; an undetermined will states that nothings causes you to do  anything, you just behave randomly o 3. So, a free will acts for reasons of its own It’s not external causes and it’s not undetermined; it’s Internal  causes o 4. To act on the basis of reasons is to act on accordance with a  universal law 3 and 4 work together o 5. We have no insight into the content of any particular moral law I cannot know what the content of moral law states based  strictly on my own power No direct insight into any particular moral laws o 6. So, the only thing left to determine the will is the form of the  universal law Free will acts on the form of the law o 7. Therefore, a free will is determined by the categorical imperative Part 1 shows an intimate connection between free action and moral action o 8. If you must act under the idea of freedom, you really are free

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
