Social media over usage is a major social problem facing society today. However, there can be things done by society as a collective whole to improve this epidemic. After doing research, I believe that the best possible way to inflict change within communities is to provide resources about the 7 basic principles of social media, and how to maintain a healthy life outside of it. An article identifying the key aspect of social media identified these principles as “Identity, Conservation, Sharing, Presence, Relationship, Reputation, and Groups” ( Somwanshi, Salegaonkar & Sharma, 2015). Each of these key components can play a vital part in communities understanding how to use social media in a healthy matter. Communities need to encourage people to get out and maintain a social life outside of the computer of cell phone screen, so that the basic function of society is not altered. Another thing to do is to make people aware of their virtual social self. The social world is an entirely different place for internet users and understanding how to use maintain a social life and media life is very important in this (Somwanshi, Salegaonkar & Sharma, 2015). Social media can be positive for society is used in moderation and respectfully. Social networking can be a place where individuals influence others to get out and be active or make a difference in the world. It can also be a place for people to reconnect and enjoy old company from any place. By providing communities with resources and perspective on social media versus the social self, issues that face social networking can be eliminated.
