3.5 Describing findings Exactly what goes in this part of the report will vary widely depending on the subject and purpose of the report. Here, though, are two areas of language that might be useful if you need to describe facts. Describing approximate numbers Findings are simple descriptions of what you have found out. This may involve describing and summarising numbers, for example: 56%: just over half of the respondents 28%: more than a quarter of the respondents Useful language: …..…. The vast majority Almost nine in ten Almost 90% ….… Just under three out of ten / 30% Just over a quarter (US: Just over a fourth) About a quarter (US: about a fourth) (Only) a minority …….. The majority More than six out of ten Just over 60% Just under two thirds About two thirds …... Only a few Fewer/Less than one in ten Under 10% Are iPhone app developers ignoring the vast majority of mobile customers? Brands that focus on the iPhone are ignoring the vast majority of customers that use other phones. That’s the message from mobile analytics firm Bango and it’s clearly underscored by the latest statistics. 60 © CPBE 2019 Source:

Describing consensus It is also often necessary to indicate consensus: the extent to which an opinion is shared by other people. We can indicate consensus in a number of ways, e.g.: % Positive vs negative Useful language 0 - Nobody feels that…. / It is unanimously felt that…is not… - Almost no one believes that… - Very few (people) think that…. - Only a minority of people agree that…. -/+ Just under half think that… 50 -/+ Opinion is equally divided as to whether… -/+ Most people believe that… + On the whole/Generally speaking, it is felt that… + It is generally/widely agreed that… + The vast majority of people think that… + There is an overwhelming opinion that…. 100 + Everyone (unanimously) agrees that….. 61 © CPBE 2019
