The Cortez family is quite disjointed and lacks cohesiveness and could benefit from the Circumplex Model. The family appears to be distant (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2013) and could benefit from cohesion and togetherness. Olson (2000) found that families that are balanced have better communication skills than unbalanced families. This model could assist the Cortez family with developing better communication skills and also with assessing the family’s flexibility and how they adjust to change. Paula Cortez is pregnant and has various significant health issues including HIV and Hepatitis C. The father of the child has remarried and Paula’s older son Miguel is in school and has a job. Not only is the family system disjointed, but at times it is chaotic. Miguel has stepped up to provide some support to Paula however it has been limited (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2013). Paula and Miguel do communicate some but could benefit from developing better communication skills.
