teaching facilities to enhance the student’s learning experience, and to provide a superior learning environment. The fees have been kept at an affordable level, and convenient payment options are available to facilitate the education process for as many students as possible. KIC aspires to become a leading university by providing quality learning, applied research and leadership. Al Khawarizmi International College started as Al Khawarizmi Computer College in 1985. The next step towards its current development occurred in 1988, when it began to widen its fields of study. In 1990, the College campus moved to a building in an area called Al Khalediya. Within five years, Radi decided to further develop the College by widening the course range through the provision of various undergraduate and associate degree courses; for this reason, the name of the College was changed to Al Khawarizmi Institute in 1995. The next step in the development of this institute was gaining an ISO 9000 certification, which it received in 2000. In 2003, the institute gained accreditation from MOHESR and it was again re-named, as Al Khawarizmi International College (KIC). During this same period, the campus was moved to a bigger location in order to accommodate the enrolment of many additional students as a result of gaining the accreditation. The new building is located in the Tourist Club area of Abu Dhabi. The college first rented five floors of the building (each floor taking up 600 square metres in area) and then expanded into 3 additional floors. In 2010, Al Khawarizmi International College started offering a bachelor’s degree program. As the number of students was constantly increasing, a grant of land was acquired to build a new permanent campus: due to intense competition, KIC saw the need to build a campus that was suitable for a university college. The campus plan encompassed 40,000 square metres of building space, much larger than the previous buildings. This campus will allow the College to offer high-standard facilities, such as a food court, sports halls, a bigger library and study spaces, more classes, labs and offices, student and faculty accommodation, and outdoor spaces. Also, car parking will not be a problem anymore as the campus will have two underground storeys of car parking, plus there is plenty of space around the new campus for extra parking. The land in Al Bahia is situated 30 minutes outside Abu Dhabi’s city centre and is located right next to Deerfield’s Mall, Al Bahia Park and a big mosque. 4
The founder Al Khawarizmi International College was founded by Naim Radi in 1985 (shown in figure 1.0), shortly after he graduated in IT engineering. Radi is from Bethlehem, Palestine. He came to Abu Dhabi to stay with his brother and to seek a suitable job. However, he could not find an appropriate job and so decided to open his own small computer training centre, aiming to establish a centre that taught Information Technology (IT) from entry to the most advanced level.
