Assortative mating: people tend to match up with people who are similar to them in these way Love and Attachment o When in love, people form different kinds of attachments o Attachment Theory vies adult love relationship, like those of infants being secure, avoidant, or anxious Secure: Rarely jealous or worried about abandonment Anxious: Agitate and worried partner will leave Avoidant: Distrustful, avoids intimate attachments There is a longitudinal study since 1975 and looked at relationship with parents, and this study continues on and on o Effect of Early Attachment Relationships People who are treated poorly early in life and lack secure attachments may have some problems with committed relationship as adults As children: trouble regulating negative emotions As teenagers: trouble dealing with and recovering from conflict with peers As adults: tend to protect themselves by becoming the less-committed partner in their relationships o Good Part: If an insecurely attached person can get into a relationship with a securely attached partner, these vulnerabilities in maintain stable partnership can be overcome Motivation to Love: o Our motivation to love often start with biology o But they are shaped and directed by: Early experiences with parents Our culture and historical era Gender Roles Even economic dependency or self-sufficiency o BIOLOGY OF LOVE All human beings have an innate need for attachment and love (it’s ‘wired’ in) Psychologists distinguish between: Passionate (romantic) Love o A whirlwind of intense emotions and sexual passion Companionate Love o Characterized by affection and trust o Love as Motivational Systems Helen Fisher, research psychologist that focuses on 3 different motivational systems we lump together as ‘love’ Three separate, often independent, motivational systems that increase our reproductive success: Lust (sexual motivation) Romantic Attraction (motivation to find the best mate and settle down with them)

Commitment (motivation to stay together long enough to raise offspring) Chemicals involved… Love, Hormones, and NTs o Pituitary Gland Posterior parts receive connections from hypothalamus There are 2 nuclei in the hypothalamus (nucleus is a cluster of cell bodies) Hypothalamus produces ADH and oxytocin o Various brain chemicals and hormones are associated with bonding and trust: Vasopressin (ADH) Oxytocin Both of these hormones exist in both genders, but ADH is more important in males and oxytocin in female bonding o
