MODERN LIFE A) City Life Because of their strong economies, most Western Europeans enjoy a high standard of living Most Western Europeans live in cities Most Western European cities have good public transportation systems and many cultural attractions Crime rates are relatively low Europeans enjoy the most vacation time in the world, getting about 30 paid vacation days a year B) Recent Conflicts Immigration has been a source of conflict in recent decades, with large numbers of immigrants from North Africa and the Middle East, resulting in some anti-immigrant protests and violence in some cities Terrorist attacks also remain major threats, especially in cities such as Paris and Berlin

A HISTORY OF SEAFARING CONQUERORS Today, northern Europe consists of the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Nordic countries Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland The history of this region has been a history of using the sea and conquest A) Early Conquerors This region has been conquered by many different groups throughout history, including the Sami, Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, and Germanic tribes Beginning around 795, a group of seafaring warriors from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden terrorized Europe These Norsemen, or Vikings, sailed in long ships to coastal towns and conducted hit-and-run raids They conquered parts of Britain and sailed to Iceland, Greenland, and even North America In 1066 , William the Conqueror of Normandy (today part of Northwestern France) conquered England and began to rule it The Normans spoke French, and over time the English language acquired many words of French origin
