ANNIE Well then Whitney come down to the stage! Come now, come – be not afraid! [WHITNEY goes on stage and stands next to ANNIE . ] Now my dear patron, I hand you my scepter So that you may touch safely our political leper [ANNIE hands WHITNEY her scepter. WHITNEY takes it and gleefully approaches the cage. She pokes HESTER with the scepter through the slits of the cage. ] WHITNEY Oh I am giddy with joy! What happiness and fun She looks so cute, I would love to have one! [HESTER suddenly grabs the scepter and runs off stage, breaking the snare. ANNIE The racist is loose! The racist is loose!
25 Everybody after her before she gets her hand on a noose! [ Lights go out as sharp howling rushes back in. As lights come up, WHITNEY stumbles away from figure SR to CS. The figure SR puts their black hood up. ] WHITNEY What the hell was that? SHADOW Power. WHITNEY I don’t want that. I don’t want that. SHADOW Why do you still hold onto this this façade of a good nature when below your good intentions lies nothing but a vipers nest? WHITNEY That’s not fair. I’m not like you. I’m not a monster. SHADOW Nor are you a saint. WHITNEY What do you want from me? SHADOW To let me free. WHITNEY Why would I ever let you free? SHADOW [ chuckles ] It’s only a matter of time. Now wake up. [ Sound of SHADOW blowing out a candle. Lights out. ] Wake up. Wake up. Wake up. ANNIE Wake up. SCENE V [ Lights up on SL side: the basement. Sound of rain can be heard. HESTER is chained to a beam with a padlock. ANNIE shakes WHITNEY awake. ] ANNIE I need to go check the computer. Watch her. We always keep an eye on her from here on out. [ANNIE exits. Lights go out then back up. ] HESTER I need to go to the bathroom. WHITNEY What do you want me to do about it?
26 HESTER You want me to just go on the floor? WHITNEY [ Thinks. ] Number one or number two? HESTER Both. [WHITNEY gets up from her chair to exit. As she does, we hear the jangling of some keys against her pants. While she is gone, HESTER grabs the pen from her pocket. We here her click it before hiding it behind her back. After some time, WHITNEY comes back with a bucket. She stops, keeping her distance and slides it towards HESTER.] Are you kidding me? WHITNEY It’s all I could find. [ Beat. ] Aren’t you going to go? HESTER Can you turn around? WHITNEY I’m not going to turn around. HESTER I just want some privacy. [WHITNEY reluctantly turns around. Lights go out, then back up. HESTER is sitting down on the ground. WHITNEY is in a chair. Beat. Thunder can be heard from far off. ] HESTER [ Holds down puke from stench. ] Am I a hostage? WHITNEY No. HESTER Then why am I here? WHITNEY It’s hard to explain. HESTER Are you going to kill me? WHITNEY We’re trying to help you. HESTER [ Moves, shaking the chains around her in the process. ] Is this what you call helping? WHITNEY I know it may not make a lot of sense right but once we’re done you are going to feel a lot better. HESTER Do you think I’m sick?
27 WHITNEY Again, it’s hard to explain. I don’t think you would even believe me if I told you.
