realize how horrible his condition was and how hard it would be to end such tragedies not only to himself but to all his other brethren. Douglass vowed to himself that he will become free and although that doesn’t come for many years and many trials disheartened his hope, he never gave up with the plan of being “free.” Free being in quotations because it was never guaranteed that a slave could be completely free even in the North without being sent back. As years past, he claimed, “I have found that, to make a contented slave, it is necessary to make a thoughtless one” (Douglass 308). This quote saddened me the most, because it was the truth in those days. If the slaves knew of nothing better for them, why would they believe they could have better? In late 1830s, Douglass finally made his escape. He devoted the rest of his life to the abolitionist movement and proved to be a key component in helping the movement because of his firsthand experience. Without the knowledge he acquired from books, newspapers, etc, he would have never escaped and we would never have known the name of Frederick Douglass. Work Cited

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
