Climate Change and Civilizations 1) Collapse of Bronze Age Civilization in modern day India and Greece about 4,200 years ago, because of abrupt climate changes. 2) In the US Southwest, the Pueblo Indian’s ancestors, the Anasazi, succumbed to decades of intense drought and cooler temperatures during the 13 th Century (in addition to factors like warfare and religious turmoil). (Science Journal ).

3) Fertile Crescent (Iraq and Syria) Human evolution in irrigated agriculture occurred after an extended drought and cold spell. 200 year cooling period about 8000 years ago slashed precipitation levels in the region by 30% , according to marine and geological records. Mass migration occurred away from dryland farming to the creation of irrigated fields along the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Mesopotamian Civilization and the first cities developed.

Bantu Migrations (3000 BC to 1100 AD) From what is now Eastern Nigeria into southern and eastern Africa. What are the causes and effects of Bantu migration? The reasons for the migration of the Bantu are not known, but they most likely included the following: Drought and Famine: The Bantu moved due to the fear of famine, which broke out due to overcrowding and drought. Climate Change Skeptics Four skeptics positions : 1) Climate change is not happening, and they can prove it. 2) World climate may be changing, but it is not human caused . 3) World climate is changing and humans are playing a role, but it will not do much harm . We can easily adapt to it. 4) World climate is changing and it matters, but it is too late to do anything about it, or it is too difficult or too costly to avoid it, so we just have to hunker down and suffer . Almost all skeptics are amateurs and have no scientific credentials. The overwhelming world scientific consensus is that world climate is changing, and the changes being observed are because of human activity.

2) The climate may be changing, but human activity has nothing to do with it . 1) Ice ages have come and gone in past Earth history, but those climate shifts occurred because of changes in Earth’s orbit. 2) The current rise in global temperatures since 1850 AD has coincided with a 40 percent rise in CO 2 levels over the same period of time.

3) Whatever happens, we can adapt. Climate models suggest that the most adverse effects of climate change will be visited on the poor countries , even though they have done proportionately much less to contribute to climate change than rich countries. Some rich countries, like Canada and Russia, are likely to experience milder temperatures with climate change.
