September 12, 2016 State government provides what all we need based on need State gives it to you and then in return you do your job and give back Farmers grow food and give it to people as they need it; when farmer gets sick he goes to the doctor and they repay them ‘state’ provides everything how can state provide if we own everything? The state apparatus is only there to manage and distribute; that’s its only function (what it’s supposed to be anyways) You need the state structure to organize Role of the state government in communist society Utopia it’s perfect and beautiful… yeah, it never really works out that way - Extreme right: o Capitalism All resources and all means of production are in private ownership by individuals. Ownership by the few Capital: those that own the stuff have capital Everything in a purely capitalist society is in hands Me with my hard earned money will sell my services to other people What does the government do? NOTHING; they own and control nothing Simple market principles like supply and demand provides stuff for people as they need it People need food? I’m a farmer so I sell my food and then I get money, if I need a doctor then I go and pay for it with my money You can do whatever you want; lots of opportunity BUT over time wealth becomes concentrated into very few hands In the US Walmart: private business held by a private person o He did good and he got money and he was rich o His empire grew and grew and consolidated wealth and he put other businesses out of business who can’t compete
September 12, 2016 o There used to be 100 businesses like Walmart and now they’re gone and Walmart is the only one left - what’s the problem? o These two systems are the absolute edges of the spectrum o Where does pure communism or pure capitalism exist in today’s world? Nowhere Yes, capitalism does exist, but not pure capitalism Why do these two systems in their pure forms fail all the time? What’s wrong with communism? o Looks great on paper! Everyone is happy and has all their needs met o A: It’s too complicated!! You can’t have the government decide EVERYTHING o Any time a small group of people say they’re gonna control it all, they fail o Look at Russia, China, Cuba; it always fails o A: it’s too easy to be corrupted o A: Communism in practice become extremely stagnant o If you make stuff and then give it away, why would anyone work hard o If I work 10000 hours a week, and my neighbor only works 2 hours a week, we get the same thing, I’m not going to work hard o People don’t try to make new things or invent things What’s wrong with capitalism? o Looks great on paper!!! o A: In a purely capitalist society, there is too much consolidation of wealth o A: Stagnant economy Particularly if you have lazy kids who do nothing who inherited everything their parents made o A: opportunities limited
