17:46The Estate System:rules europe or 1,400 years -Europe was ruled by roman empire. The state hadone goal: welfare of the people in the ruling class. The system was so cruel that a small amount of people in rome had everything, and the other lived in extreme poverty. The romans had slaves to create channels of water who carried it back and fourth. If you resisted the roman empire you would either be tortured or killed. When the roman empire fell apart, rome was divided into different estates: each estate was controlled by and owned by their land lords. Every estate had everything of their own (prisons, etc). -Nobility: (lived like kings) beneficiary of system-- exploiting farmers-Clergy: beneficiary of system-- priests and exploiting farmers... tried to manipulate bible in favor of the nobles, played a role to justify the cruelty-Peasants: farmers--no control on land, what they possess, extremely poor and had no control Dimensions of Social Stratification in the US-Economic: Occupation, Income and Wealth -American Dream: now just a theory. At that time if you worked hard you were able to achieve your goal. opportunities are not equal and goals are not equal.-In the US: wealth- when you have wealth you dont need to work. your money works for you.-Income: disposable cash, income comes from wealth and job. if u happen to be a wealthy person, they are directing income.-In the U.S. ranking is not always associated with money. many times certain occupations have little or more respect with their title.
