suffering when your alive because as long as you are alive, your own death
hasn’t come yet
Premise 4: at the same time, death doesn’t produce suffering in the dead, sicne
they don’t experience anything at all
no life afte death, don’t experience
anything at all, no suffering , plato says death is like endless sleep.
Premise 3&4 make 5: Death causes suffering for neither the living nor the dead
death doesn’t produce suffering in the living, doesn’t produce suffering in the
dead , it doesn’t produce suffering in neither
How does it cause suffering – premise 6 (2&5): death doesn’t cause suffering for
everything is either alive or dead , death doesn’t cause suffering for
Premise 7: (1 &6) : we should only fear that which causes us suffering, death
doesn’t cause suffering for anyone; therefore “we shouldn’t fear death”. We
should not fear our own death as it wont cause suffering and anything that
doesn’t cause suffering should be feared.
*** don’t fear death because there is no afterlife
Popular view : believing in an afterlife will make us less scared about death. Epicurus thinks the
opposite. He says if you think there is an afterlife (hell or heaven) but when your dead, you are
just dead, no need to fear death if you don’t believe in the afterlife.
Someone who cares only about pleasure cant be trusted
Death not an Evil
Whatever causes no annoyance when it is present, causes only a groundless pain in the
expectation. Death, therefore is nothing to us seeing that, when we are (alive) death hasn’t
come) , death is nothing to us, seeing that, when we are, death is not come and when death
not. It is nothing, then either to the living or to the dead for with the living is not and
the dead exist no longer.
