Caroline incident (American steamship- went back and forth across the  Niagra between NY and Ontario) b. British attacked the caroline because mad i. Ship did sink- didn’t go off the falls- only one American was  killed in this incident ii. This incident exasperated the tension vi. 1841-2- finally led to a treaty 1. Known as the Webster-Ashburton 1842- fixed boundary between maine and  canada- americans got more land but Britain got the land they wanted to build  their road 2. British and Americans had a dispute about boundary of maine and Canada –  lumberjack war 3. 12,000 square miles of territory that was in dispute 4. Webster negotiated (secretary of state) with lord ashburton 5. British wanted some specific land- building something from something to  something a. Aemricans got more land, but british got what they needed to build the  road vii. Boundary between minnestota and canda (secondary issue) 1. Turned out to be a gain to US 2. Mesabi Range- contained iron ore- important in late 19 th  century d. By regularizing those issues- led to an end of the overall frictions- important for both the british and  Americans to have a good working relationship i. British could not grow enough food for their people- imported food from the US ii. Both sides neede each others help Texas- broke away in Mexco- in the war of texas indepndedn 1835-6 1. Santa Anna- forced ot signa  treaty proclaiming texas independence 2. Sam Houston- wanted Andrew Jackson to agree to annex texas- he knew that it would cause a big issue 3. Texas became its own country- Lone Star Republic- Sam Houston became president 4. Independent texas was desired by some European nations- especially the British a. Texas is independent- check the expasnsion of the US i. Us woulnd’t grow to be as big and powerful a country ii. British saw two different advantages from trade perspective 1.
