a man in the eye. Never allow yourself to be alone with a man who isn’t family.” (McCormick, 15). Females are expected to follow a strict set of rules as they get older because men will start to look at them differently. They have to be conservative in the presence of a man even from as early as 11-12 years old. Females are constantly being oppressed by men because they feel that they are a man’s property. Later in the story after the monsoon is over, Lakshmi is observing how her part of the village looks and compares it to how Gita’s families part looks like. She says “Gita’s father did not spend his afternoons in the tea shop; he spent his days building paddy walls that could stand up to the monsoon… his rice plants bow to the sun and his little boy splashes in the mud. This shows that men have duties that they need to fulfill in order to protect their home. A real man, like Gita’s father did what he did to prevent their house from getting ruined. Men like woman also have a role to play. All in All, ‘Sold’ taught people about the reality of life for people especially woman in Nepal. It showed gender inequality in many different ways including the things Ama had to do vs the things the stepfather was doing. Although these gender roles are unfair, the women seem to put up with it and stay strong for themselves as well as their children.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
