Solid State Drive (SSD) 3:06-4:04 A competitor to hard disk drives are solid state drives. Solid state drives are another type of long term storage device, but they use a flash memory instead of platters. Solid state drives are designed to replace a standard hard disk drive. Many devices use a solid state drive in place of a hard disk drive. For example, a video editing workstation might use a solid state drive because it can read and write information faster than a standard hard disk drive. Solid state hard drives are also found in smart phones, notebooks, and laptops, cameras, watches, and fitness trackers. A solid state drive has other advantages besides reading and writing faster than hard disk drives. They're smaller and lighter than a hard disk drive, and because they don't have any mechanical partsthey don't create as much heat, consume as much energy, and have better reliability. However, solid state drives are more expensive and in general have a smaller storage capacity. Flash Memory Device 4:05-6:04 There are other types of long term storage devices that use flash memory like a solid state drive. These are called flash memory devices. This is an example of a flash storage device. It is also called a thumb drive or a flash drive. If you opened up this device, you would see rows of memory chips. Now, the memory chips inside of a flash device are different from the memory chips used inside your system RAM because they are programmable. You can write information to the memory locations in the memory chips and then remove power from these chips and still have the contents of thememory remain intact. You can't do that with standard dynamic RAM used on a system memory board. Because of this, you can take a flash memory device, plug it into the appropriate port on the PC, and have it function like standard hard disk drive. You can store and read data on it and format it like you would a regular hard disk drive, but you are writing and rewriting data to a location on a memory chip instead of spinning platter. Portability is a definite advantage of flash devices. This particular flash drive uses a USB interface, so all I have to do is unplug the flash drive from one USB port and plug into another USB port on another system and I've got access to all my data. Flash memory is also used in digital cameras, smart phones, and digital camcorders. For example, a digital camera can use SDHC memory, which is a flash device. If you have card reader installed on your PC, you can remove the memory card from digital camera, put it in the card reader in the PC, and use it just like a standard hard disk drive or thumb drive.

Besides portability, flash devices are also relatively fast. They read and write information nearly as fast or in some cases as fast as a standard hard disk drive. Flash devices also provide a lot of storage space in a very small physical package. You can buy flash storage as low as four gigabytes all the way up to 128 gigabytes.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
