social, political, racial cultural and religious backgrounds. Literature Review Definition of corporate social responsibility Crowther and Seifi (2018) define corporate social responsibility as the practice where business organizations go out of their way and engage in activities which are out of their ordinary business operations and from which they seek to get no reward. The primary objective or purpose for the existence of any business is to earn profits. To maximize profits, businesses are compelled to develop strategies which will increase revenues but at the same time reducing the costs of operation. However, the authors indicate that while businesses inject their resources in various ventures, there is, however, no expectation of returns. The primary purpose of getting involved in corporate social responsibility is for businesses to leave a positive impact on society. For example, an organization may decide to take part in ocean clean-up activities. Besides, an organization could decide to take part in fundraising for cancer awareness campaigns. In both of these instances, there is no expectation of the business engaged in these practices making any profits of economic gains from the ventures. Thus, when an organization is getting involved in corporate social responsibility, then the welfare of society rather than the interests of the business is the primary concern.

CSR AND ETHICS 9 On face value, it may appear that business organizations do not benefit when they take part in corporate social responsibility ventures. It may be easy to see that these organizations inject their resources but there is no direct economic reward which they receive. However, what is always forgotten is that while society will benefit from such exercises, the business organizations will also reap bountifully from such engagements (Cheng et al., 2014). It is incredibly important to note that the participation in CSR allows for the creation of suitable environments which in the long run contribute to the success of the businesses. For example, when an organization takes part in health awareness campaigns, its efforts will lead to the creation of a healthy and robust workforce and that will be in the best interests of the business. In the event where a majority of the population has ill-health, the impacts of such a situation will hurt even the business interests of the organization. In this regard, it is notable that while there may be no direct and traceable benefits of CSR to an organization, it is notable that in the long run, the business will benefit massively from such engagement. Corporate social responsibility is a matter of accountability. The principles of CSR demand that organizations must be accountable for their actions. It is desired that organizations need to make sure that their activities do not have adverse impacts on the surroundings in which they function in. For instance, it is possible that organizations, through their activities, may pollute the environment. In this paper, the focus is on the role which hotel managers play in
