Charmaine Mitchell RE: Discussion 1 - Week 5COLLAPSECulture is shared beliefs, traditions, religious, and social groups. Culture is handed down from one generation to the next and it shapes people’s thoughts and behaviors. Within my family culture respect, the Christian religion, and family privacy is of the importance. My family’s belief is that counseling is out of the question. In order for a social worker to effectively assist my family in the face of a pressing issue, the social worker must understand that getting my family to engage in services will be a difficult task. The NASW stated, “Social workers should have a knowledge base of their clients' cultures and be able to demonstrate competence in the provision of services that are sensitive to clients' cultures” (Standard 1.05[b]). The social not being aware of and/or understanding that the individual’s lack of participation reflects his or her cultural belief may cause frustration for both the client and the social worker.National Association of Social Workers. Paulita Edmondson RE: Discussion 1 - Week 5COLLAPSEI am of the African American culture and we are from the southern state of Tennessee. In order for social workers to truly be competent when working with my culture, they must trulyunderstand the identity and mindset of southern blacks, especially the older members. Tennessee is one of the states that racism still is a factor and Tennessee was a state that once had slaves. My culture stems from one that has endured oppression and still struggles with being seen as equals in their own community so social workers must understand that when dealing with southern blacks, you are dealing with those who feel institutionalized.
