According to Pookie, a current Crip member, there is no chance, the rivalry and the warbetween the Bloods and the Crips will ever stop, only it might decline in terms ofviolence and frequency of homicides, “Truce between Bloods and Crips never last toolong. There’s always something” (“Gangland”).25The main symbolic color of the Crips is blue and so the new gang chose red instead, callingthemselves Blood inspired by the color. The typical left side of the body emphasis was alsochanged to a right one by Bloods, i.e. the Blood members started to wear a red scarf on the leftand rolled up their left sleeves and trouser-legs (“Gangland”).35
3.The Aryan Brotherhood“When you talk about a White group, the bell that rings the loudest is theAryan Brotherhood” (“Gangland”).“It's [the Aryan Brotherhood] not a social club, it’s not a bunch of kids playingat Neo-Nazis; these are very dangerous men, who will exterminate yourfamily. … That’s who the Aryan Brotherhood is” (“Gangland”).The MS-13 and the Crips are both gangs that are prevailingly in the territoriesof the urban streets, but a gang called the Aryan Brotherhood originated and has beensurviving and flourishing almost entirely in the prison system only. This sociologicallyspecific environment has shaped the gang into an untypical form in comparison toother street gangs, including the MS-13 and the Crips. Still, there is a set of featuresthat are common to the gangs in general. The Aryan Brotherhood, often shortened as ‘AB’, is structurally andfunctionally very close to an organization, rather than a gang only. Although there havebeen profound changes during the history of the Aryan Brotherhood, it has preservedits original White supremacist character. The AB gang is almost purely mono-racial, butbeing of Caucasian and non-Jewish origin is definitely not a key prerequisite to the ABmembership (“Know Gangs”).Despite the fact that one of the primary motives for the emergence of the ABwas an alliance of the White minority, the race has not remained a main AB policy for along time. Originally, the membership of the Aryan Brotherhood was exclusively Irish36
American and most of the gang's early activities were racially based. Gradually, thegang started to be driven by profit and partially diverted from the racial restrictions.According to Melissa Carr, a member of Anti-Defamation League in Orange County, “inthe beginning, their crimes were solely motivated by race. As the criminal organizationhas evolved, they have tended towards crimes that have little or nothing to do withrace” (“ABC News”). Similarly to other gangs, including the Crips, the AB has been prone to creatingalliances with gangs of non-Caucasian races to boost the drug business if needed. Theallies have been ranging from the Mexican Mafia to the African-American gangs too.
