Additionally, apart from providing universities with developing curricula, these standardsalso provide nursing students with a tool to assess their performance. It helps them set goals that they plan on achieving if they want to work as professional nurses. These competency standards encourage practices in the nursing profession that encourage responsibility and accountability in their actions. This does not only reflect in their professional lives but in their personal lives as well.According to these standards, the role of a nurse comprises of promotion and maintenance of health as well as prevention of illnesses for people with either mental or physical disabilities (Hamlin &Richardson, 2011).
