Application of Pender’s Theory in Nursing PracticeNola Pender states that the purpose of her model is to assist nurses in understanding the key factors of health behaviors which promote a healthy lifestyle. The assumption is that nurses’ influence on patients can last the entirety of the patient’s life. Pender’s Manual of a Clinical Assessment for Health Promotion Plan lays out questions to be asked of a patient regarding personal influences, behavior, social support, situational influences and commitment to a series of actions (Wu, & Pender, 2002). Nola’s model utilizes nursing diagnosis, interventions, researchand practical application. The model’s scope focuses on behavioral modifications to improve health can easily be implemented into nursing daily practice. Nursing goals can focus on empowering potentials, resources, and capabilities for communities, families, and individuals to help them acquire a healthy life. Pender’s Health Promotion Model is a vital part of empowering the discipline of nursing when the knowledge it puts across are put into practice.Application of the Health Promotion Model and Healthcare Policy TrackPender’s theory can be applied to my future goals as a healthcare policy nurse. Such a nurse must understand the connections between policy, financing, andaccess to quality health care in order to promote healthy outcomes (AACN, 2011, p. 21). The goals of Healthy People 2020 mimic the goals of the HPM regarding the pursuit of health through health- promoting behavior. Healthy People 2020 asserts, “well-being is a relative state where one maximizes his or her physical, mental, and social functioning in the context of supportive environments to live a full, satisfying, and productive life” (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2017). Nurses can assist patients attaining healthy lifestyles through health promoting behavior which improves quality of life. The master’s prepared nurse involved in healthcare policy must mobilize community campaigns and coordinate services for individuals toimprove the health of Americans and address health care expenditures (Institute of Medicine, 2013, p. 210).Another example of health policy nurses involved in health promotion is the federal Maternal, Infant, and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program (NACNEP, 2016, p. 10).
