According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection the 2018 wildfire was the most destructive season in record of California. In mid-July-August 2018 there were a series of wildfires in the northern part of the state; destructive Carr Fire and the Mendocino Complex Fire. The Carr Fire scorched the city of Redding is considered the largest fire in

FIRE MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES 3 California history. The disaster was caused by a spark caused by vehicle failure and the dry brush, high temperature and shifting winds made it difficult for the firefighter to control. The steep terrain also made it difficult to build containment lines. Homes were destroyed and lives were lost. Specifically the fire killed 7 people and scorched 229651acres and destroyed more than 15000 structures (Karimi & Mossburg, 2018, August 5) . Those who died included firefighters trying to save the lives of others. The Mendocino Complex fire on the other hand comprised twin fires: the River Fire and the Ranch Fire. The fire grew rapidly due to dry vegetation, high temperatures and the afternoon winds. Although the fire never resulted to death, many were left injured, structures destroyed and acres of land scorched. The destructive Carr Fire and the Mendocino Complex Fire are examples of California 2018 wildfire incidents. Both State and Federal partners responded to the California 2018 wildfire incidents. Both emergency response and recovery operations were initiated by local, state and federal agencies including long-term recovery needs. Response strategies include establishment of base camps and provision of emergency medical services. This is in addition to the firefighters who worked tirelessly to put off the fire. The Federal Emergency Management Agency approved several fire management assistance grants to enhance funding for additional manpower. Public assistance was also focused on the damages structures. Unlike other fires which are usually contained through local and state departments the California 2018 fire incidents were different and dangerous and hence were considered as major disasters. The State government has ever since supported Forest management Projects to protect the most vulnerable communities. Some of the mitigation strategies proposed includes removal of hazardous dead trees, creation of ingression and egress corridors among others (Wozny, 2019, April 5) . Several stakeholders learned various lessons from the California 2018 wildfires. One of the lessons is the need to revisit the building codes and to promote fire resistant construction in the wildland urban interface. From the incident we also learned about forestry managing. Considering that logging has significantly been reduced to conserve the environment and to enhance sustainable growth of the forests the dead trees were noted as major disaster since they burn like a match.
