What is the association between academic performance and delinquency? o School failure is a stronger indicator of delinquency than economic class, racial/ethnic background, or peer group relations. o School failure is a direct cause of delinquent behavior that leads to emotional and psychological problems that are the actual cause of antisocial behavior.

o School failure and delinquency share a common cause b/c both caused by personal and social problems. What factors are linked to school failure? o Personal problems, social class, tracking, alienation What is tracking ? What are the effects of tracking on delinquency? o Tracking is the dividing of students into groups according to their ability and achievement levels. o Tracking is a contributor to school failure b/c it can label a student and cause them to have no hope of achieving academic success thereby causing lack of motivation which may foster delinquent behavior. How safe are America’s schools? Why? o School is one of the most dangerous places for juveniles to be b/c they are surrounded by others who their age who are likely to commit bad acts How widespread is bullying in our schools? Why? o About 25% of all public schools report bullying to occur on a daily or weekly basis What are the suspected causes of school violence? o School-level : high proportion of students behind reading level, many from families on welfare, school located in community with high unemployment/crime/poverty rates, and school climate (the social and educational atmosphere) of a school o Individual-level : many students with psychological and emotional problems, high substance abuse and student drinking, and students who feel alienated and have little parental attention o Community-level : socially disorganized neighborhoods, in high crime areas, gang memberships and affiliations that amplifies into conflict while at school What can be done to reduce school crime? o Limiting access to the school through locks, IDs, cameras, gates o Monitoring students with random checks, anonymous threat reporting, and computer and electronic device monitoring o Employing law enforcement whether in uniform or under cover as a student o Improving the school climate with early identification of at-risk students and teaching them prosocial skills rather than threatening them with punishments.
