Rocco and his Brothers Italy’s relation to the understand of migration •Internal migration (nationwide)•25 million Italians left Italy and went abroad and travel globally•Italy understood migration as after the second world war internal, vice versa •The south of Italy began to suffer, economy was bad, there was no investment •After the second world war Italy became an industrial country and began to prosper•After 1945 and took place in the north•Migration became internal •Because of this shift, many problems evolve•This film is about integration because the characters that represent hope for the future •Rocco argues that integration is culture shock but to please it you need to integrate•Simone seems to be adapting, he gets involved with nadia (prostitute, and does represent the north but in a negative way) he becomes corrupt and this world kills him•You cant forget about where you come from; modernity is dangerous and it made him corrupt•Capitalism •Modernity has the power to turn things into a commodity (modernity is dangerous)•Simone becomes a commodity •Simone sells him self sexually through boxing, through a spectacle, through male violence •The family is under attack•Rocco does anything to preserve family, including to hide murder •Rocco wants to preserve his clan•Once the clan is ok, he can start his nuclear family•The modern world does not support the clan•Nuclear family became more important because of individualism and to take care of your own family•Individualism=modernity•With individualism you lose your bonds with other people•Simone is used to getting what he wants and he steels•Why? He wants to have the glitter of modern life without working for it.
•He stops training and hooks up with nadia •People who succeed understand how to take opportunity for their actions. They do well because they understand it, they do not demolish their values instead, they change to northern. Understood you have to work, they make communities and connect with them•It is possibly to negotiate individualism with hard work•The people who can balance opportunity with social connections turn out well (Vincent and Ciro)•What is wrong with Rocco? Simone is wrong when he says about Nadia (I got here first) She is not a toy she is a person. He denies his brother could be in love with her•Rocco is messed up because he over prioritizes simone and the idea of the family•Simone wants to be first and to determine the behaviour of others•Simone wanted to prove to rocco he has power over him (rape scene)•Simone has to get worse and worse to capture attention to prove rocco will stand by him •At the end of the film, rocco is forced to fight, to be in the public eye, to be in the centre of attention•Rocco dreams about going back to the south but simone forces rocco to stay in the centre which he hates•Rocco did not want to be in this position at all•Rocco inherits Simone’s fate•
