work, fail and why. According to Naik (2001), behaviorist theories such as token economies work but are limited to specific areas of psychology. Token economies begin to work when a child engages in target behaviors or “desirable behaviors.” the desired behaviors could be anything, for instance, playing nicely with their peers or completing homework. Therefore, after the parent has identified the child’s target behavior he/she is given tokens for engaging in these acts so that they can use their tokens to buy activities that are desirable to them. Just like nicotine and alcohol addiction stops when one stops ingesting these substances, token economies also fails when the parent ceases to award the child for engaging in target behaviors (Naik, 2001). Additionally, Darwin’s theory states that human beings are continually improving to gain better self-control (Naik, 2001). Thus, token economies begin to fail when a child feels he/she needs to have more control over their life. It is because of these reasons that most scholars believe that behaviorist theories are not as comprehensive as they were once thought to be. However, behaviorist theories are remarkably useful when applied to certain situations.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
