KLAMATH COUNTY COMMUNITY HEALTH7In discussions with Sky Lakes Medical Center Infection Control Department, it was stated that the goal of the facility to immunize or vaccinate all in-patients that fit criteria to do so.However there is no program in place and no plans to provide this same service to people who are not in-patients of the hospital. According to Lindsey Hamilton, infection control RN for Sky Lakes Medical Center , only 78% of all eligible in-patients have been vaccinated for the flu or pneumonia. Also, this does not address the citizens who are not receiving their primary prevention services such as mammograms and prostate exams. The home health director, Eric Weathersby, stated that they routinely visit patients at theirhomes but they only cover a 30 mile radius from the hospital. That leaves over 3000 square miles underserved.Cascades East, a local medical clinic, provides low cost or no cost care. However, they do not have any mobile clinics and patients do have to travel into the city of Klamath Falls for care. They are partially subsidized by the government through grants, however, they have not attempted to fund any outreach clinics or mobile medical vans with grants. They feel that they are serving the uninsured or underinsured to the best of their ability at this time. They are also constantly recruiting for medical providers and spend a significant amount of their advertising budget on recruitment. The City Council approved the addition of the Blue Zone Project to the County. This partnership hopes to improve the health of the community in a verity of ways. They are providing health meal planning, improving walking and bike paths, encouraging people to quit smoking and increase daily exercise. They have partnered with the local supermarkets to move soda and other sugary drinks to higher shelves and prominently display healthy alternatives and to promote the fresh foods section. When asked about providing quality medical care they state that they are not going to be pursuing that in this program. Two out of the four churches that were visited stated they have had or have plans to have community health fairs in conjunction with Sky Lakes Medical Center and medical parishioners. They also provide some transportation to members of their congregation that are unable to drive. This is a very limited population with limited providers for this service.B5
