precious. What I mean is that these people might have true potential if they just acted right, hence why they are “golden shovels” but instead are digging their own grave and soon die. 12) One theme that can be taken from this poem is a sense of pride. It's quite obvious this group of pool players take pride in their aimless actions and have no plans on stopping this behavior, which is why they admit that they will die soon. They have too much pride to even take a step back and slow down and realize this isn't the best way to act, which is why they are not going to stop and will willingly die young. 13) The poem “We Real Cool” is about a group of teenagers who play pool, most believe its a group of black males. Regardless, of gender this group of teenagers are rebellious and go against society's laws. They have no sense of direction and act out towards society, they dropped out of school and rather be out playing pool and drinking. But as things go, this group of friends will shortly come to an end because it's inevitable that these actions come with consequences which is why they “die soon”. But this poem is relevant to today's 21st century world because there are many teenagers who find themselves lost in society and the only way they know is to become misfits. In this poem this group of teenagers turned to alcohol but in today's world it's easier for people to turn to things much stronger like drugs as an escape from the real world. This is why this poem out of all the poems we read in this class was my absolute favorite. I really enjoyed this reading because as a teenager I can relate to this group of pool players. Yes, they act out in
5 the wrong way but they are young and want to have fun by living life to the fullest the only way a teenager knows how. Every teen has their own stories and memories of hanging out with friends and everyone knows they might not always be so innocent but speaking as a teenager this moments are the most memorable. Sadly, this group of people know “We die soon” which is where I can't relate because there should always be a limit to these things, but nevertheless I really loved this short poem.
