685 Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms, 2018 Edition TROUTMAN SANDERS LLP loan through Freddie Mac on behalf of DTH Partners LLC and broker Ackman-Ziff Real Estate Capital Advisors. The loan was used to refinance the existing debt for 20 Exchange Place, a 767-unit luxury apartment building in New York City. Currently the tallest structure south of Wall Street, the 86-year-old property was originally built to house the headquarters of City Bank-Farmer Trust, the predecessor of Citibank. September 2016 Big Pharma, Big Deal Troutman Sanders represented Canada’s Cynapsus Therapeutics Inc. in its acquisition by Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc., a unit of Japan’s Dainippon Sumitomo Pharma Co. Ltd., with a value of $635 million in an all-cash transaction. As a part of the deal, Sunovion acquired Cynapsus’ drug candidate, APL-130277, which is designed to be a fast acting, easy-to-use, on-demand treatment option for managing OFF episodes associated with Parkinson’s disease. GETTING HIRED Vault’s Verdict: To get an offer from Troutman Sanders, a combination of smarts and amiability is key. Strong grades are important, but if you can’t pass the all-important “I’d grab a beer with you test,” you’ll face an uphill battle. Hiring Process • “The firm is always on the look-out for new talent; from my experience, they look holistically and not just at law school/ pedigree. I know that grades are important, as are any signifiers of good writing experience and attention to detail, such as clerkships, law review, fellowships, etc.” • “The firm puts a lot of emphasis on personality and inter- personal skills. That said, law school attended and grades are still one of the main considerations. The firm also considers diversity when interviewing candidates. There is a lot of competition for the candidates that the firm targets, so it is common for these candidates to have received multiple offers from other firms.” • “The firm seems to try to get students from the same group of schools, and could probably expand its search a little bit. The firm frequently hires from UGA, Emory, UNC, and Georgia State.” • “No discrimination on level of school, but more focused on the tools that a potential hire has. Laterals are preferred in my particular office.” Interview Questions • “When interviewing, I often try to get the candidates to talk about themselves and figure out what they are passionate about. I also always ask if the candidate has any questions about the firm.” • “I normally look for personality fit when I interview.” • “They want to know what experience a candidate has with the particular regulatory framework of the practice group. In my area, that is: FPA, PURPA, various FERC orders, etc.” • “Questions are experience-based rather than theoretical.” Lateral Integration • “There is some basic orientation but no larger efforts to introduce laterals to individual attorneys.”

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
